Alcohol in Breakfast Traditions

While it may seem unusual today, the idea of enjoying alcohol at breakfast has historical roots. In colonial America, it wasn’t uncommon for people to drink beer or hard cider in the morning. This practice reflected the norms of the time, where beverages like these were safer than water. In Connecticut, as the morning meal evolved, such traditions faded, paving the way for lighter, non-alcoholic options. However, the concept of pairing breakfast with beverages lingered, eventually leading to the modern trend of brunch cocktails, which honor that historical connection to morning indulgence.

"This was my first visit and I really enjoyed it. I was concerned because it was a Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and I just knew it would be busy and we may not get seated right away; we were seated as soon as we walked in. Our server was very attentive. The food arrived within 10 / 15 minutes When going to most breakfast places for a first time especially, I always go for my go-to, which is the eggs benedict. To be honest when my eggs benedict and home fries arrived, the holidays looked a bit different than I am used to at most places and I was unsure about how it would be, taste-wise. I really enjoyed it and I ate every bite. I always get my English muffins toasted extra for that crunch and so they don't end up too soggy. Perfect amount of Hollandaise and the home fries were good as well. Tasty coffee, which matters because you would be surprised or not, that a lot of breakfast places don't serve super good coffee. 😕 I will definitely come back, thank you Bree for introducing me to this breakfast/lunch spot and thank you Tina for your exceptional service. There was another young lady there who was our actual server and I am so sorry I did not get her name. She was great as well! I paid for breakfast and with the tip it was around $40 I did not take a picture of my blueberry pancake which I saved for the next morning. Yummm"

"Very Hearty Breakfast. The corned beef hash was chock full of quality meat. The OE eggs were cooked perfectly. The home fries were very good as was the rye toast. The waitress was slammed but managed to stay out in front of it. Very friendly staff and to watch the kitchen bang out meal after meal was fascinating. The ambiance is a perfect fit for Deep River feel. Plenty of street parking."

Breaking the Fast Through Time

Breakfast has evolved dramatically over the years, transforming from a simple, utilitarian meal into the cultural cornerstone we recognize today. Early American breakfasts often consisted of basic porridge and cider, especially on frontier farms in Connecticut. These humble beginnings served to refuel hardworking farmers after long nights of rest. By the 19th century, the rise of affluent lifestyles led to more lavish spreads, mirroring the traditional full English breakfast with its array of bacon, eggs, and beans. This shift not only reflected changing tastes but also a new appreciation for breakfast as a significant meal of the day.
