"My friend and I were looking for a good breakfast spot before leaving the area, and this diner was the best find of the day! We love classic diner food, and this place delivered. I was driving a van with a trailer and a motorcycle—parking was doable, but just barely. A few more cars and I would've been out of luck. Inside, it’s a bit tight, especially when full (which it was), but totally worth it. The food was excellent, the service even better—both waitresses were friendly, attentive, and kept our coffee full. Big shoutout to the two ladies behind the counter working hard on the grill. We’re really glad we stopped in!"

"I love this little Diner! It’s small, adorable & has great food at a very reasonable price! I called ahead bc I saw they had biscuits & gravy. I was hoping to have breakfast even though it was almost noon. They serve breakfast until 1:15 pm - they close at 2 pm. The young girl took my order over the phone. When I arrived 10 mins later, I asked if I could dine in which she pleasantly said “of course”. She asked me for my drink order. I just opted for ice water. She then delivered my order within minutes. Two eggs up, 1 biscuit & gravy, hash browns. It was a perfect sized order - not a huge plate - more like an oversized salad plate 10-12”D- just the right size! Everything was fresh. The eggs were cooked perfectly. The biscuit was DIVINE. FRESH, LIGHT, FLAKY. The sausage gravy was NOT greasy & was just the right amt of sausage & gravy. Hash browns has a crisp edge but still moist chunks of potatoes. The decor was cute with a bunch of fun whimsical memorabilia. The staff were pleasant, polite & efficient. I will definitely be going back anytime I am in the area!"

From Porridge to Pancakes

Breakfast has come a long way from its humble beginnings. In colonial Connecticut, the morning meal often consisted of simple porridge made from grains, reflecting the agrarian lifestyle of the settlers. As the centuries progressed, breakfast evolved into something more varied and exciting. By the 19th century, people began to crave richer options like pancakes and cornbread, especially with the rise of agriculture. This shift mirrored the growing availability of ingredients and the desire for heartier meals to sustain laborers throughout their workday, illustrating how breakfast adapted to the changing needs and tastes of the population.

The Rise of the Diner

Imagine a cozy spot where the aroma of coffee mingles with the sizzle of bacon. This was the essence of diners, which began sprouting up in Connecticut in the early 20th century. These venues became a favorite for both early risers and late-night workers. Diners offered a wide range of breakfast options, from eggs to sandwiches, catering to diverse palates. The charm of diner-style breakfasts was not just in the food, but in the social experience they provided, where people gathered to share stories over steaming cups of coffee. This culture of community remains alive today in many breakfast spots across the state.

Beer for Breakfast?

While it may seem unusual today, beer for breakfast was once a common practice. In colonial Connecticut, hearty ales and ciders were consumed in the morning, especially among farmers who needed a boost before heading into the fields. This tradition reflected the agricultural lifestyle and the importance of calorie-dense meals to help sustain energy levels. Over time, as health reforms gained popularity in the 19th century, lighter fare took precedence, leading to an eventual shift away from such heavy morning beverages. This transition showcases how cultural norms and health beliefs can dramatically reshape breakfast customs.
