The Influence of Immigrant Cultures
Connecticut's breakfast scene has been enriched by the many immigrant cultures that have settled in the state. Each group has brought its own flavors and traditions, weaving a rich tapestry of breakfast options. For instance, Italian immigrants introduced dishes like frittatas and espresso, while Eastern European communities added bagels and cream cheese to the morning repertoire. This delicious blending of cultures highlights the importance of diversity in shaping local food customs. Today, Connecticut residents enjoy a breakfast landscape that reflects these varied influences, celebrating traditions that honor both their heritage and the shared experience of enjoying a meal.

Customer Reviews
"I had such a great experience today that I had to leave a review. My daughter and my dad and I went here for Fathers Day. My daughter is allergic to pretty much all the average breakfast foods that we eat in this country. Can’t have dairy or eggs. So that limits so much. The staff went out of their way to accommodate my daughter. We all got our food at the same exact time. They triple checked with me on all of her allergens and what she could eat off the menu. They even went to a dedicated area in the back, to ensure she had no cross contamination. I almost cried because where we are from in Georgia, nobody accommodates her. They all say ‘sorry, we can’t risk the allergen exposure’. And this restaurant didn’t even bat an eye. Delicious food. Fabulous prices. HUGE portions! I ordered a few things thinking they would be average size portions because of the pricing (and the insane inflation everywhere) but my entire family left full & with leftovers for $50. Again, we each had multiple dishes. So the food we had could have fed 4-5 people/meals. Really can’t beat this place! I wanted to make more allergy families aware of the kindness and awareness these people have towards allergies. They could have just as easily said it was too busy to accommodate my girls needs, but instead they said ‘oh it’s no problem whatsoever’. Thank you to La Monicas. 💛 we will be back!"
"My family and I have been going to Lamonicas since the 1980s. Generous portions, delicious food, and warm atmosphere make it a home away from home for me. Definitely recommend!"
"Hidden Gem! Excellent food and service! Everything is delivered hot right off the flat top. Owner is kind and ensures everyone is receiving tip top service. Great prices and big portions. Thank you!"

Breaking the Fast: A Ritual
Breakfast, which literally means 'breaking the fast,' has a rich and varied history in Connecticut. In colonial times, this meal was often a simple affair, consisting of porridge or leftover bread, eaten quickly to fuel a day of hard work. By the early 19th century, as society evolved, so did breakfast. Wealthier families began to indulge in more elaborate meals, mimicking the full English breakfasts popular in Europe. This shift reflected not just changes in food availability, but also rising social aspirations and the growing importance of leisure in American life.

From Porridge to Pancakes
In Connecticut, the transition from simple to more varied breakfast foods mirrors broader trends across the United States. Early breakfasts often featured hearty grains like oats and cornmeal, staples on many frontier farms. Yet, by the late 1800s, lighter options such as pancakes and waffles gained popularity. These fluffy delights, often served with syrup or fruit, became a beloved choice at family tables. This evolution highlights how breakfast has shifted from a functional meal to a more enjoyable experience, reflecting changing tastes and lifestyles.
