"We tried this spot for breakfast, looking for great pancakes. Normally, if we go to breakfast, we try to get Sally and Bobs when they have the lemon ricotta pancakes … today, we dared to be different, and we are glad we were! First, a warning, portions are huge. I wanted to try it all, so I got the Phat Boy (appropriately named by the portion sizes) and my honey got the banana pancakes. The phat boy was way too much food, but oh so good. The pancakes were perfect, the bacon (I think I got like 6 pieces) was amazing, the the toast is to die for, and the eggs were spot on. I did t love the home fries, but I rarely do, so not a ding on them. The banana pancakes were great. The fruit is cooked in the batter then topped with more fruit. We love this spot and will definitely be back!"

"Angelo's Breakfast and lunch is a gem! Located in a great spot with ample free parking, the cozy and warm vibes make it a must-visit. Despite a busy Sunday morning and a staff shortage, the team was friendly and supportive. I had the Irish Benedict – a standout dish – while my wife enjoyed the Philly cheese omelet, both of which were exceptionally delicious – some of the best we've had in Connecticut. The service was top-notch, especially with the Omar's Colombian coffee on refill. Prices are reasonable, making it an easy recommendation for breakfast or lunch. Highly recommend!"

Breaking the Fast: A History

Breakfast has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Once simply a meal to break the overnight fast, it evolved significantly over centuries. In colonial America, breakfast often included hearty options like porridge and cider, reflecting the agricultural lifestyle of the time. As the nation grew and industrialized in the 19th century, the concept of breakfast shifted dramatically. Wealthy Americans began to mimic the lavish full English breakfasts, filling their tables with bacon, eggs, and more. This transformation marked the start of breakfast as not just nourishment but a social and cultural ritual.

The Shift to Lighter Fare

As the 19th century progressed, so did beliefs about health and nutrition. Health reformers began advocating for lighter breakfast options, contrasting sharply with the previously popular hearty meals. This shift was particularly evident in Connecticut, where the rise of health-conscious dining trends led many to favor lighter foods like fruits and grains over heavy meats. This change highlighted an important cultural moment—where breakfast became not just about filling the stomach but also about embracing wellness. The influence of this period can still be seen today in many breakfast offerings that prioritize fresh, wholesome ingredients.
